The Shape of Water : Creating a Fairy Tale for Troubled Times dives into the art and making of visionary director Guillermo del Toro’s Cold War Era science fiction tale.
Highlighted with inserts of the director’s own production sketches/notes throughout the book, this volume charts the entire filmmaking process, from development to design and finally filming, complete with plenty of production stills, select storyboards, conceptual art work and more.
As with any of the director’s past films, the production and set designs are always meticulous and incredibly detailed. I posted this particular observation on my twitter feed, and got a like from Guillermo del Toro himself –
There is not I believe a single dull frame in Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. Every shot is art directed and set dressed to perfection. #TheShapeofWater @RealGDT @shapeofwater pic.twitter.com/EIe8tUuslv

(above & below) This book also features plenty of art work by Del Toro’s long time creative collaborator Guy Davis ( BPRD ), including a stunning mural found in the film that is amazing homage to the Russian fairytale artist Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin.
The Shape Of Water is one of my favourite films from 2017. This superb art/making of book is a great companion to the movie, highlighting the amazing art and film craft going on behind the scenes. My highest recommendations.
I also highly recommend another book on Guillermo del Toro – Cabinet Of Curiosities, featuring his sketches.
