This stunning hardcover volume showcases the sketches of Alan Lee, the Oscar-winning conceptual designer for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, with some 150 pieces of art work including 20 full-color plates and numerous examples of the conceptual art produced for Peter Jackson’s film adaptation.
You might be wondering why I am only now reviewing an art book for a film franchise that was released some 2 decades ago in 2001; the book was published before my book reviewing days and with a long slew of other titles vying for my attention since then, it was just never on my radar until I chanced upon the book on Amazon recently. In any case, it’s a most excellent volume worth picking up, so here we are.
I was introduced to Alan Lee’s amazing concept art for Lord Of The Rings quite early on because a friend was working on the VFX for the trilogy back then, so I had full confidence the contents of this book will be quality even before I bought it.
I think the sheer splendor of Alan Lee’s stunning and immaculately detailed sketches speak for themselves; fans of the film trilogy can surely see how big an influence the artist’s concept art work had in shaping the final visual representation of the characters, creatures and locations.
This book is an excellent companion to Peter Jackson’s highly acclaimed film trilogy, and gets my highest recommendations. I’ve also lined up a few other LOTR/Hobbit art and sketchbooks that I’ll be reviewing over the next few weeks/months.
