Japanese illustrator Morinaga Yo (モリナガ・ヨウ) is an artist whose work I consistently follow ever since my discovery of his delightful art book The Tank Primer, a collection of whimsical watercolor illustrations detailing the history and inner workings of WWI tanks that remind me of Miyazaki Hayao’s Daydream Notes.
Morinaga has also illustrated and written a good number of educational picture books for children, and The History Of Transportation (乗り物の歴史) is one of his latest publications. Through his lively drawings and illustrations, the book takes us through the evolution of transportation and vehicles since the start of the industrial revolution to modern day spacecraft.

Although the contents of the book is clearly aimed at a young age group, I still find Morinaga Yo’s charming watercolor illustrations to be of sufficient appeal for me to pick it up. It is also a good study book for those learning Japanese as all the Kanji characters have furigana ( the small hiragana characters appearing above each word ) to indicate and assist with reading/pronunciation. Recommended.
I really enjoy Morinaga Yo’s style of illustration and have reviewed a good number of his picture books so far; see here for the whole list.
