Word from my lucky Japanese friends who were able to catch Takehiko Inoue’s new SLAM DUNK animated film is that it is all sorts of amazing; so I ditched my usual practice of not reviewing an art book for a movie that I’ve yet seen. Besides, I’ve always been a big fan of SLAM DUNK and I’m betting good money that I won’t be disappointed when I do see it.
THE FIRST SLAM DUNK re:SOURCE is a visual guide for the highly anticipated movie and showcases a good mix of character design sketches, development drawings, detailed storyboards and a lengthy interview with director Takehiko Inoue ( in Japanese ). Also included is the manga “Pierce”, which I believe tells the backstory of Miyagi Ryota, one of the lead characters in the manga and this film.
What came as a nice surprise was the A3 sized poster of the movie bundled (image below); this alone is almost worth the price of the book ( about $16 USD ). Also, the cover illustration on the slip jacket folds out to reveal the main players of the Shohoku basketball team that will serve well as a mini poster as well. ( image further down )
(image above) The slip jacket folds out to reveal the main players of the Shohoku basketball team and makes for a great mini poster.
A good collection of content from the making of THE FIRST SLAMDUNK, plus the poster and all for a very reasonable $16 USD. Highly recommended, especially if you are a fan of Takehiko Inoue’s art work.
I also recommend checking out his 2020 art book PLUS+, which collects all the new cover illustrations he painted for the revised edition of the manga.

Thanks for the review and flipthrough. I was somewhat on the fence with this book. Really wished one could watch the movie in theaters in NA, but sports anime seem to be a hard sell compared to shonen animes.

Max – You’re welcome ! Same here, I doubt this will be in cinemas here in Vancouver, it’ll likely be a while before I’ll have a chance to watch it.

Thank you for the flipthrough, I’ve been searching high and low on internet about this book whether the ratio is more image or text, because I can’t read Japanese
