In this revised and expanded edition for the 25th anniversary of Pixar’s feature films, The Art of Pixar – The Complete Color Scripts collects the breathtaking behind-the-scenes visual process of colorscripts.
Colorscripts are the sequential paintings that visually represent key story moments from each film and set the lighting, color, and tone during the filmmaking process. As a lighting/compositing artist working in the film/animation industry, I work with colorscripts on a regular basis, and they are an indispensable and invaluable resource that help guide us when we’re trying to nail down the look of any sequence as envisaged by the director/art director.
This expanded edition features colorscripts from Pixar’s feature films and shorts, starting with their first movie Toy Story right up through to some of their latest titles like Onward and Soul. The colorscript for each individual shot are represented as a thumbnail and with the big landscape format of the book allows for a very clear overall view of the color palette/temperature used on the sequences. At work we often use similar layouts like these to check for color consistencies and to quickly spot any outlier shots that might not sync well within each sequence.
(above) Colorscripts from the 2021 film Soul. Some of these are also collected in the art of book for the film.
Pixar studio has been making animated feature films since 1995 and is clearly one of the top leaders in the animation industry, and these colorscripts offer an excellent way to study their amazing work; plus they’re lovely to look at too ! Recommended.
