Love, Death & Robots (stylized as and represented in emoji form as ❤️❌🤖) is an American adult animated anthology streaming television series on Netflix. The 18-episode first season was released on March 15, 2019. Each episode was animated by different crews from a range of countries; the series is a re-imagining of David Fincher and Tim Miller’s long in-development reboot of the 1981 animated science fiction film Heavy Metal.

In June 2019, Netflix renewed the series for an eight-episode second season that was released on May 14, 2021, with an eight-episode third season released in 2022. Love Death + Robots is a Netflix series like no other—a breath-taking journey of mature, high-concept tales told with seductive characters, astounding plots, and explosive action. With each episode crafted by different animation teams across the globe, the thought-provoking anthology covers a vast range of animation styles from edgy 2D to stop-motion to anime to hyper-realistic 3D CG.

In this deluxe hardcover book, discover the wealth of artwork and stories behind the creation of the series’ first three volumes. Includes interviews with key artists and creatives such as series creators Tim Miller and David Fincher, and is full to the brim with everything from beautiful concept art, character studies, costume sketches, paintings, vehicle designs, storyboards, and early vision decks, through to finished frames. Perfect for any fan of animation.

Because of the sheer amount of concept art material ( spanning over 3 seasons with 34 different shorts in total ) that has to be covered in just 256 pages, the focus and pages given for each short is therefore fairly limited, but the quality is undoubtedly fantastic.

I’ve enjoyed most of the episodes from all the three seasons of Love Death + Robots; with two of them actually done by my talented colleagues from Sony Imageworks ( Lucky 13 & Vaulted Halls Entombed ). The quality of the productions are truly exceptional, and the concept art covered in this art book reflects the amazing quality. Highly recommended.

Great review! I can’t deny, I usually look forward to the shorts made by Alberto Mielgo and Robert Valley most. Also email notifications for your reviews haven’t been showing up lately.
