The Art Of Captain America : The First Avenger Book Review

I know, I know; why am I only now in 2024 reviewing the art book for a movie that came out all the way back in 2011 ?!

Back when Captain America : The First Avenger was first released, my reactions after watching it was that it’s good, but not great. But over the years as I re-visited the film on physical media, it started to grow on me more and more, and more importantly, I realized I had paid too little attention and appreciation for the wealth of splendid design ( costume/character/weapons/vehicles, you name it ) that the many artists who worked on the show had put into the film.

In particular, I am very impressed by the WWII era sophistication of the weapons/machinery/vehicles used by the Nazi regime and powered by the Tesseract ( the Space gem ), and sci-fi/supernatural elements set during this era/genre is a favorite of mine ( think Raiders Of The Lost Ark and The Rocketeer, which by the way is also directed by Joe Johnston ).

Anyhow, that is why I decided to pick up this book for review. As far as the contents of the book is concerned, it is absolutely splendid, covering a huge collection of fantastic concept art for all the aforementioned categories; costume/character/weapons/vehicles as well as mood boards and also storyboards and poster art work.

Book synopsis – The 4th of the 24 Marvel Cinematic Universe Infinity Saga film titles being published as a complete set. Packed with exclusive content, this fully illustrated tome sheds light on how Captain America: The First Avenger was created, including concept art, drawings, movie stills, and storyboards. Follow the film’s complete artistic evolution, from casting and costume design, to the creation of characters, environments, weapons, and war machines, and on to the final rendering seen on screen.

Here is everything you need to know about the making of the movie from all the key players – including director Joe Johnston, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, co-producer Stephen Broussard, the amazing cast, and all the talented individuals who worked on the set and behind the scenes to create the art of Captain America.

The next time when (if) you’re watching this film, enjoy the movie’s narrative of course, but at the same time pay just a little more attention to all the design of the clothes, the characters, the weapons; all of them were meticulously designed for the screen, something that we viewers can sometimes take for granted all too easily.

I’m really glad the art book for the film is still widely available for a movie that was released quite a while ago; I believe this is a new edition ( a reissue of the 24-book Marvel Studios: The Infinity Saga series published as a resized matching set ), but the contents should be the same as the older edition. If you enjoyed the film as much I do, you will certainly like this book as well. Recommended.
