Tech Noir : The Art of James Cameron Book Review

I’ve always known James Cameron to be a good illustrator and that he often draws the concept art pieces for his own films, but I didn’t know he was THIS good. It seems I know very little indeed, because apparently he did (illustration) it for a living and supported himself by illustrating theatrical posters and concept art for low-budget films before creating the visionary concept pieces that would help greenlight his first feature, The Terminator.

This over-sized hardcover art book showcases a comprehensive collection of his illustrations, from his earlier personal works to unrealized projects, as well as concept art pieces and storyboards for many of the films he has directed like Aliens, The Abyss, The Terminator, Titanic and Avatar. I’m particularly impressed by his detailed drawings for Aliens, including the Power Loader, APC and the Dropship; with all the designs faithfully reproduced and realized in the final film.

A unique journey into the mind of a creative powerhouse, Tech Noir is the ultimate exploration of one of cinema’s most imaginative innovators.

(image above) Ripley battles the alien queen with the Power Loader; this impressionable illustration has also been featured in two other books; The Making Of Aliens and Alien The Archive, but I believe the version in this book is of the highest print quality.

A fascinating and insightful dive into the creative psyche of James Cameron through his drawings and illustrations, all beautifully reproduced in this giant and sturdy hardcover volume. I have more new-found respect for his cinematic craft, and reading this book has given me a layered understanding of his work. Highly recommended.

I’ve always been impressed by the Cameron paintings/drawings that I’ve seen, but yeah, it’s obvious that I had NO idea about just how incredibly talented an illustrator he is.

Some years ago I wondered why no one had collected Cameron’s drawings/paintings for ALIENS and THE TERMINATOR. Looks like I got my wish and then some! I may get my hands on this–thanks for the great review!
