It’s hard to believe 5-6 years have passed since Japanese manga artist/illustrator Eguchi Hisashi released his art book STEP, which he just followed up with the 2nd volume. The book features over 120 pages of brand new art work and is also available as a 2 book set.
Eguchi Hisashi’s distinctive art style is always easy to spot; with art work/characters rendered in flat, simple colors but always with expressive facial expressions, especially the eyes. His work has only gotten better over the years.
If you scrutinize his work, you can likely discern some palpable influences from other renowned artists like Roy Lichtenstein as well as Hergé, the creator of TinTin.
The artist’s clean, beautiful line work and simple, stylish characters that capture your attention are a few of the reasons I love his work. This is a great companion book to go with the first STEP art book and comes recommended.
I also suggest checking out his earlier art books like King Of Pop and Works.

I feel like this type of art isn’t what I’m into until I actually see this type of art! LOL. The reference to Roy Lichtenstein was exactly what I was thinking when I was scrolling down through the images you posted before reading your post.
I love the painting of the girl with the headphones in the blue car down by the beach.

Chris – Right ? His “superflat”, very graphic design approach to illustration is refreshing for me with all the other more realistic, richly rendered illustration styles out there.

Great artbook. I jumped on the 2 book set as I recalled seeing your review for Step 1.
I also agree that the simplistic art style just has something that’s very captivating.
