Steam Reverie In Amber ( 琥珀色の空想汽譚 ) is the first published art book / illustrated story book by Tokyo based Japanese artist Kuroimori (黒イ森), who has previously worked for Square Enix and on titles like Final Fantasy XIV.

The artist has a strong liking for steampunk visual motifs and retrofuture themes, as clearly represented in the illustrations; the unique takes on the horoscope and tarot illustrations and designs are certainly eye-catching as well.

I really enjoy Kuroimori’s richly illustrated art, complete with elaborate costume designs and props which the artist must have spent a considerable amount of time researching and refining. The detailed line-work and crosshatching also greatly accentuate the artist’s great use of colors and adept rendering.

I only wish the print size of the book was larger so that I can better appreciate the illustrations without squinting my eyes too much. All that said, this book comes recommended, and I certainly look forward to the artist’s future work.
