This beautiful volume is the official catalog for Japanese anime director Makoto Shinkai’s ( Your Name, 5 Centimeters ) art exhibition which at the time of writing is still touring Japan.
The book, totaling close to 200 pages is a fantastic collection of art work from Makoto’s films, from his earlier work like Memories Of A Distant Star to his smash hit Your Name. Background art, storyboards, genga ( keyframe drawings ), layout boards, character design sheets are all included. The big print size of the book really shows off his art to great effect.
(above & below) Art work from The Garden Of Words, a short anime film which I actually enjoyed more than Your Name. I definitely recommend the background art book, which showcases stunning art of the Shinjuku area, one of my favorite haunts in Tokyo.
This is an excellent book to enjoy all of Makoto Shinkai’s animation art work from all the disciplines ( background art, animation, layout, storyboards and more ) right up to Your Name.
Anime/Art exhibition catalogues like these are not widely available for purchase outside Japan, but luckily this one can be found on Amazon Japan and Amazon.com. Recommended.

I have seen Voice of a Distant Star when I was around middle school. …At the time Anime to me was either shojo transformation/shonen fighter-stuffs; and when I saw the movie I do remember how impressed I was by the movie’s silent & empathetic quality.
….I honestly think Dir. Shinkai flopped a bit on certain others, like 5 centimeters.

Star – Makoto Shinkai creates the most amazing visuals for his animated films, but I’m personally not a big fan of his directing style ( I feel he relies too heavily on the characters narration to tell his stories ).
DISTRAKT – Get it ! :]
