Rome Sketchbook Review - Fabrice Moireau

I spotted this sketchbook of Rome by artist Fabrice Moireau while in a bookstore in Tokyo and after thumbing through just a few pages, I was mesmerized by his beautiful watercolor illustrations of the city. I’ve only been to Rome once many years ago, but it is such an amazing city filled with rich cultural heritage ( not to mention excellent coffee ! ), and Fabrice’s lively illustrations really transport me back to the wonderful time I spent there.

All the pieces showcased in the book are beautiful, but the wide vista shots are something special indeed. I also love the clean layout and the cursive type captions that accompany the illustrations adds a nice touch to the overall aesthetic as well.

Book synopsis – Rome Sketchbook transports the reader to the magnificent centre of ancient Europe, the home of breathtaking cityscapes and inspiring architecture such as those seen at the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter’s Basilica. Inspired by this hub of art and historical heritage, Fabrice Moireau, the artist behind some of the other books in this series of cities such as Paris Sketchbook and Venice Sketchbook, presents a timeless collection of watercolour paintings and sketches that will prove equally delightful to those familiar with the city, or discovering it for the first time.

These lovely watercolor illustrations of Rome are just so comforting to look at; I also like the thick matte paper stock used for the book, which has that nice tactile feeling and resemble the actual kind of paper used for watercolor media. The artist Fabrice Moireau has sketched quite a number of books for other cities as well, and I hope to pick up a few more in the near future. Highly recommended.

I also recommend taking a look at Jiro Taniguchi’s travel sketchbook for Paris as well as the Singapore sketchbook, both of which showcase splendid watercolor illustrations of the two cities as well.
