I’m a big fan of Japanese illustrator/manga artist Eguchi Hisashi (江口寿史) and have reviewed quite a number of his art books, but this particular one seemed to have eluded me…until recently. Once again I have my Tokyo trip earlier in the year to thank for this fantastic find; there’s really no better way to discover new and exciting Japanese art books than to be in one, physically browsing through volumes.
Anyway, this particular item is rather hard to categorize, as it’s not strictly an art book per say, but a collection of 29 vinyl cover ( and hence the fitting name RECORD ) sized mini poster cards plus a similar sized booklet, all housed in a clear plastic slip-case.
The illustrations on the cards are everything you would expect from the artist, bold and colorful drawings rendered in his signature “super-flat” style with hints of creative influences from legendary artists like like Roy Lichtenstein as well as Hergé, the creator of TinTin. Any one of these will work wonderfully once framed up and will class up any plain wall immediately.
The accompanying booklet gives a little more background information on the art pieces themselves, some of which were used as music album covers and others for the cover of his art books.
Eguchi Hisashi’s simple and graphical art style will always be refreshing to look at, and this one serves both as an “art book” or a poster set depending on how you like it. Highly recommended.
I also suggest checking out his earlier art books like King Of Pop and Works.
