A Randoseru (ランドセル) is a firm-sided backpack made of stitched firm leather or leather-like synthetic material, most commonly used in Japan by elementary schoolchildren. Traditionally it is given to a child upon beginning their first year of school, whereupon the child uses the same bag until grade 6. The ethymology of the name is most likely borrowed from the Dutch Ransel or German Ranzen meaning “backpack”.
Because of the high quality make and stylish design, Randoserus have in more recent times become popular as a fashion accessory as well, especially outside of Japan where they are less commonly seen.
This lively illustrated children’s picture book by Japanese artist Morinaga Yo ( also author of Tokyo Skytree / Tsukiji Fish Market ) takes us through the intricate manufacturing process of Randoseru production, requiring the assembly of over 200 individual components.
A beautifully illustrated book that makes for some great learning while admiring the pretty art work. The Japanese text is all written in hiragana with no kanji and is great for those learning Japanese as well ! Recommended.
I really enjoy Morinaga Yo’s style of illustration and reviewed quite a few of his picture books so far; see here for the whole list.
