Noriyoshi Ikeya (池谷仙克) is a Japanese art director who has been involved in the art and character design for several television programs, including Tsuburaya Productions and Senkosha Productions. Ikeya was born in 1940 and, after graduating from Musashino Art University, was invited by his senior Narita Toru, to join Tsuburaya Productions. He took on various roles such as stage design, special art assistant, art direction, and mechanical design.
Between him and his senpai Narita Toru, both of them have created some of the most impressionable and iconic kaijus for Ultraman, including Takkong, Arstron, Sadola and Twin Tail.
Running at close to 200 pages, this art book showcases a huge collection of these Ultraman kaiju character/creature designs as well as environment concept art.
Just like the kaiju designs by Narita Toru, Noriyoshi Ikeda’s monster creations are both nostalgic and also serve as a great study of the prevailing visual aesthetics of tokusatsu during the 1960/70. It is interesting to note that the recent Shin-Ultraman (2022) by Shinji Higuchi continue to draw reference and inspiration from these original designs for the kaijus that appeared in that film. Recommended.
