Nausicaa Of The Valley Of Wind Deluxe Edition Vol 1 Manga Review 風の谷のナウシカ 豪華装幀本 (上巻) 宮崎 駿

Nausicaa Of The Valley Of Wind ( Kaze No Tani No Naushika ) is a manga written and illustrated by renowned anime director Miyazaki Hayao. The manga was first published in chapters by Tokuma Shoten in their monthly magazine Animage from 1982 to 1994, and when completed was collected into 7 Tankobon volumes as it appears in this boxset.

This special deluxe edition ( made up of 2 volumes ) was published in 1996, and comes in a bigger print size ( though still not 1:1 size of Miyazaki’s original drawings for the manga, I think ) and also better quality paper. The 7 Tankobon Vol boxset is printed on somewhat pulpy paper, and this deluxe edition is printed on a smoother and thicker paper grade which shows off the art work better.

Nausicaa is a manga masterpiece, and this deluxe edition offers beautiful reproductions of his art work for great reading. My highest recommendations – I hope to acquire Vol 2 in the near future to complete my collection.

If you’re on a tighter budget but still want to own the entire collection, the Tankobon boxset is the way to go. For English readers, check out the Viz Comics Boxset.

One of my favorite manga. I have the Viz boxset that you mention, which is really a very nice edition, but I am sorely tempted by this. It looks beautiful.

Chris – It’s not cheap, but definitely worth the money ! :]

Hi Younghow,

AFter your review I bought the two-volume japanese edition since it’s slightly bigger than the english Viz publishing ones.
Kind of hard to tell from your photos, but the ink used to print these books is brown/sepia I guess? Mine looks brigther than your photos, I wonder if it’s true or is it just your photos that are a bit on the dark side?

ribowski – Hey ! It’s been a while since I’ve read these books, but if I recall correctly they are indeed printed with the brown/sepia ink. The brightness shuoldn’t be too far off from my pictures though; they are a touch dark in my pictures but not too far off I think.
