From the late 1890s until his death in 1926, champion and founder of the Impressionism art movement Claude Monet devoted himself and his work to the stunning Water Lilies series, a uniquely immersive collection that is now on permanent display at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, France.
These world-famous works are rediscovered by delving into this thrilling story, wonderfully illustrated by Alexandra Huard, who carried out an impressive amount of research. Four final double-page documents link the work, archive photos, and illustrations to explore further and uncover Monet’s secrets.
Just like many of the art books that I’ve reviewed this year, this beautiful volume I discovered during my time in Tokyo earlier this spring. Although it feels like a life-time ago now, I’ve had the good fortune of seeing Monet’s Water Lilies originals at the Musée de l’Orangerie when I visited Paris way back in 2012.

Monet is surely one of my favorite Impressionist painters, and this lusciously illustrated volume is a fresh new way of appreciating his work and life. Highly recommended.
Note – This is the Japanese edition of the original French illustration book titled ‘La Petite espionne des Nymphéas’.
