Meshi Terror / 飯テロ, a colloquial Japanese term for what we call “food porn” in English is the fitting title of this epic food illustration art book by Japanese artist Mao Momiji / もみじ真魚. With over 100 pages of stunningly illustrated, absolutely mouth-watering Japanese food items like ramen, Katsudon, beef bowls, sushi, Japanese style rice burgers, tempura as well as desserts, the book cover comes with a humorous warning label stating that “Reading this book late at night when you have a hungry stomach is strictly forbidden”.
A graduate of the renowned Musashino Art University in Tokyo ( specializing in oil painting ), Mao started posted food illustrations on her Instagram account daily since 2019, crossing over 700 pieces around April of 2021 and also accumulating a huge number of followers. This is the artist’s first published art book.
This book serves not only as a great showcase of Mao Momiji’s almost supernatural ability to render stylized but realistic illustrations of food, but also an excellent visual aid to whet up one’s appetite; I certainly felt my stomach rumble as I flipped through the pages. Recommended.
If you’re into great food illustrations, I also recommend food manga artist Ishiyama Azusa’s comic Tsumamigui Bento.
