Spider-Man : Miles Morales is a 2020 action-adventure game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Based on the Marvel Comics superhero Miles Morales, it is inspired by both the character’s decade-long comic book mythology, and the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which helped to popularize him.

The game is the second installment in the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, following Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018), which I enjoyed immensely, and depicts Miles’ struggle to balance the duties of his civilian persona and Spider-Man when his new home, Harlem, is threatened by a war between the Roxxon Energy Corporation and the Tinkerer’s high-tech criminal army, the Underground.

Just like the 2018 art book for Spider-Man, this big hardcover volume explores in detail the making of the game through the huge collection concept art pieces, from the numerous Spider-Man costume designs for Miles as well as character and costume designs for the Tinkerer, Rhino and the enemies from the Underground & Roxxon Corporation. There’s also a good number of set design pieces as well as the “mood boards”; elaborate and detailed illustrations that, well, set the mood and aesthetic for pivotal scenes in the game.

(above) Showcased in the book are the many different Spider-Man costumes that the player as Miles Morales can earn as he progresses through the game, including the instantly recognizable outfit from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse( top left ).

(below right) Mile’s Spider Drone is quite clearly inspired by the one we first saw in the 2017 MCU film Spider-Man : Homecoming.

(above & below) Character / costume designs for Tinkerer, the main antagonist for the game and a formidable foe for Miles. The character’s super-powered suit is generated by “reprogrammable matter”, akin to the tech used by Tony Stark’s Nanosuit that we saw in Avengers Infinity War / End Game. I quite like the designs, especially the purple color scheme.

I thoroughly enjoyed Miles Morales; it expands upon the already fantastic world first created in 2018’s Spider-Man and makes it even better. With so many characters and story-lines to explore, and with both the immense success of these two titles, I am sure Insomniac Games will be back with even more exciting titles in the near future. This art book is a fantastic companion to the actual game, especially if you’re like me and enjoy exploring the art and design elements of the game. Recommended.
