Released in 1986, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth is one of the first fantasy films I ever saw as a kid, and the boundless imagination of the filmmakers, in particular the state-of-the-art puppetry work of Jim Henson studios and concept artist Brian Froud’s creature designs for the movie left a lasting impression on me.

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth – Bestiary is a beautiful celebration of the much beloved film, exploring the wide gamut of wondrous creatures that inhabit the Goblin’s Realm through the stunning art work and illustrations of renowned artist Iris Compiet. From Sarah’s loyal companions like Ludo, Hoggle, Sir Didymus to Jareth The Goblin King and his legion of mischievous minions, all the major and minor characters featured in the movie are represented through the delightful watercolor/graphite illustrations of the artist.

While Labyrinth : The Ultimate Visual History book that I reviewed back in 2017 serves as more of a conventional art/making of book for the movie, with original concept art by the amazing Brian Froud, Bestiary is truly an artistic showcase focusing on just the creatures of Labyrinth, and both books compliment each other with no overlapping material in terms of the featured art work.

Labyrinth is just a delightful, delightful movie and this art book, with absolutely wonderful illustrations by Iris Compiet is an excellent way to re-live the film through it’s memorable characters. My highest recommendations.
