Koshchei in Hell Mike Mignola Comic Review

Koshchei, often referred to as “Koshchei the Deathless” or “Koshchei the Devil” is a figure from Slavic folklore and a one time foe of Hellboy. He first appeared in the Darkness Calls (2007) chapter of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comic, having been sent by Baba Yaga to kill Hellboy.

This book Koshchei In Hell is the 2nd omnibus collection ( the 1st been Koshchei The Deathless ) that follows the travails of Koshchei after his run-in with Hellboy, with familiar characters in the Hellboy universe showing up, like the Witchfinder ( Sir Edward Grey ).

As a big fan of Hellboy and Mike Mignola’s work, I’m always picking up more titles from the Hellboy universe ( there’s ALOT out there ), but this particular one caught my eye more than the others because Mignola actually drew a chapter in this ( Archeron ), and Ben Stenbeck’s work is excellent as well.

Book synopsis – The world above may be over, and Hellboy gone with it, but Koshchei is still in Hell content with his wine and his books—until an old face arrives and brings Koshchei a critical task. An old and powerful foe is returning, and Koshchei must take up his sword and defend the city from destruction.

Mignola returns to Hell to reunite with one of his favorite collaborators, Ben Stenbeck (Frankenstein Underground, Witchfinder: In The Service of Angels, Baltimore, Koshchei the Deathless). Collects Koshchei in Hell #1-#4, Sir Edward Grey: Acheron one-shot, and bonus material.

(above & below) The sketchbook section found at the end of the book has become a staple feature of most of the Hellboy universe omnibus titles, and something I always look forward to seeing.

Chronologically, I should have probably read Koshchei The Deathless before starting on this one, so I’m going to pick it up at a later time for sure. If you’re a fan of the Hellboy universe and Mike Mignola’s work, you’re probably already familiar with the superb quality of art work and storytelling that would come with these titles, which makes this one an easy recommendation. And if you’re new to the work, there’s never a better time to start than now !
