I know absolutely nothing about Kimonos, but I do know a beautiful art book when I see one. I chanced upon a browsing copy of this book in a museum shop after attending an art exhibition in Tokyo, and was quickly dazzled by the gorgeous Kimono textile prints featured within.
Kimono And The Colors Of Japan isn’t so much about the elaborate affairs of adorning one ( which is an intricate art unto itself ), but focuses on the spectacular art and colors used in the textile designs, examined through the aesthetic senses of Japanese textile artists.
The huge collection of textile designs showcased ( spread across 240 pages ) are owned by the author Katsumi Yumioka, a prolific hair and make-up artist. His keen understanding of both Western and Japanese traditional fashion cultures gives the reader a balanced and illuminating look behind the design aesthetics of the Kimonos and Obi ( sashes ).
A stunning book filled with gorgeous Kimono textiles to admire, and for those seeking to delve deeper into the actual Japanese aesthetics of the art/design, the captions come in both English and Japanese for easy studying. Highly recommended.
P.S – This book is actually one of a series of books published by PIE on the subject of Kimono/sashes. Check out a few other volumes here and here.

This looks amazing. Over the last couple of years I have been getting more and more interested in Japanese textiles as art in and of itself. I’ll add this to the list of books to be purchased.
