Kikanetsu is the first art book by up and coming Japanese illustrator Daisuke Richard, whose impressionable art work has garnered him over 200k followers on Instagram.
Possessing an acute color sense, Richards subject matter focuses on Japanese school girls within the confines of their tiny, claustrophobic rooms piled up with clothes, books and personal belongings. This is actually a familiar sight in Tokyo, where apartments are notoriously small and compact – I myself lived in one such room.
The intoxicating combination of the artist’s lively use of colors and detailed drawings create interesting compositions that are fascinating to explore. ( image below ) An incredible four page foldout illustration.
A splendid first art book for Japanese illustrator Daisuke Richards, with over 170 pieces of drawings included in the volume. I look forward to more of his work in the near future.

Didn’t know claustrophobia could be source of inspiration. His usage of colors are much more subtle, compared to Nakamura Yusuke’s whose rigidity in style I bet is due to being old. Still, it’s as if he’s speaking out against social issues of Japanese youths. Something to be reminded of, in contrast to all the pop-punk visuals in Harajuku or underground scenes.
