Inside The American is a photographic visual diary kept by director/photographer Anton Corbijn during the production of his suspense thriller film The American, starring George Clooney.
Annotated with his own diary notes, the arresting photographs show Anton Corbijn’s keen eye for creating cinematic images, many of which are seen again in the finished film. The rustic charm of the quaint little Italian town (located in Abruzzo) also adds to the allure of the images, as do the two very attractive female leads.
I really enjoyed the American, a quiet, moody thriller that is a nice breather from your usual Hollywood fare. The movie really takes its time to set up the characters and revel in the nice photography of the location, itself an integral part of the film.
This book and it’s photographs are an excellent way to appreciate Anton Corbjin’s cinematography and visual-making process, seeing through his eyes as he works on location. He has a similar book for another film of his, A Most Wanted Man.

Im sold on checking out this film. Having the Italian countryside as a setting in the film is a major attraction to me. I haven’t seen “A Most Wanted Man” but I liked his other film “Control”, which I remember as being a moody film with nice cinematography.

Distrakt – love that look.
Martin – I loved control as well, mostly for the great cinematography. 🙂

I got around to watching the film and I really liked it. Beautiful shot film, and it was interesting to see George Clooney play such a quiet character. I was reminded me of “Le Samourai” (which in turn reminded me of “Drive”). Not to mention Sergio Leone silent protagonists, which of course The American cheekily threw in a clip of one of his films.

I’m glad you liked it ! I’ve actually not seen Le Samourai, so thanks for the recommendation. :]

I’m just returning the favor:)
Lastly, I gotta mention “The Conversation”, George Clooney in The American reminded me of the main character in The Conversation. Its a great film, one of my favorites.
