minahamu is an illustrator who was born in 1995 and lives in Tokyo. A graduate of Musashino Art University’s Faculty of Japanese Art, minahamu creates both analog and digital illustrations and drawings mainly of boys and girls standing in nature.
My take on why the artist’s illustrations quickly captured my attention and liking ? I think it’s because the drawings and rendering style exude a certain child-like innocence and purity; when you look at drawings done by kids, they capture the world before their eyes in an unbridled, untethered fashion despite their limited technical skills to render realistically. This unique way of painting is also why minahamu’s illustrations share a certain visual affinity to the work of the Impressionists, in particular Monet and Renoir. I love it.
Publisher book synopsis – minahamu’s first large-format illustration collection of scenic works that appeal to the viewer’s sympathy, including familiar places, landscapes from memories and more.
minahamu is an illustrator who has won great popularity in the creative field by drawing pictures of everyday scenes in which boys and girls stand among natural images such as abundant greenery and beaches. The style of illustration is impressive for its nostalgic touch, showing single scenes from everyday life, such as tall trees along a roadside, a shady park, the seaside, a meadow, or in front of someone’s grave. The illustrator’s works posted on social media have received a great deal of engagement from overseas.
minahamu has been getting attention in Japan and overseas, with solo exhibitions not only in Japan but also in France and Taiwan. We hope you will enjoy this first collection in Japan of minahamu.
Contemporary Impressionism seen through a uniquely Japanese setting; I like everything in that combination. Recommended.
Note : The version I’ve reviewed is the one released for the US/regions outside of Japan. The title on the cover art is in English, but the book contents are not translated and should be identical to the Japanese edition.
