ILLUSTRATION 2024 presents the “NOW” of Japan’s vibrant illustration scene, showcasing art work from 150 exciting artists spanning over 300 pages of illustrations. Every artist’s page comes with a short profile together with some of his/her most representational art work.
I’ve been reviewing this book annually for quite a few years running now ( see my reviews for back issues from 2023 / 2022 / 2021 / 2020 / 2019 / 2018 / 2016 ) and it has become something I quite look forward to as I get to discover all these amazing new illustrators and their work.
Just like last year, the publisher has released 2 different editions of the book, a regular and a variant cover, and the cover art are a collaboration between the two artists tamimoon and hakuikishiroi (はくいきしろい). Except for the differing cover art, the actual contents of both books are completely identical.
Most of the artists reviewed are new to me, with a few familiar artists whose art books I’ve covered/will cover. I’ve included links to them below.
(above) Illustrations by the artist known as Zipcy, whose art was also featured on the cover of this art book I reviewed last year.
This huge volume is the best way to catch up with the top illustrators working in Japan right now, as well as to review the zeitgeist and visual trends in Japanese illustration now. Recommended.
Also be sure to check out my reviews from past years – 2023 / 2022 / 2021 / 2020 / 2019 / 2018 / 2016 )
PS – The edition I’ve reviewed is the special edition; there is also a standard edition with a different cover. The actual contents of both books are completely identical.

I always love seeing the mix of art styles in these issues. I bought a couple of these in the past but then fell off for no particular reason. I think I’ll pick back-up with this year’s issue.

Stunning. I always like browsing through these books and wish some of these artists are able to get the chance to have one of their own books published (if not already).

Chris – hope you enjoy it !
Max – yes, some of the artists certainly have their own art books, and even if they don’t ( yet ), this book gives them great exposure to new fans.

Hmmm…might give this a look–but getting a copy might be tough, since funds are kind of tight right now…:(

Marc – Keep it on your wishlist ! I don’t think it will go out of print soon so you can always come back to it. :]
