Hellboy – 25 Years Of Covers Art Book Review

I enjoy every page and panel of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics, but the art covers he has illustrated for the comic are something special; often drawn with just that extra, delicate detail. Over the years as the volumes of Hellboy and the shared universe BPRD grew it became harder and harder to keep track of all the covers that he has illustrated, and I started hoping for an art book that is dedicated to just the covers. Hellboy – 25 Years Of Covers is exactly that.

This hardcover volume features more than 150 full-page cover pieces from Mike Mignola, Richard Corben, Duncan Fegredo and more, all neatly collected for easy viewing and enjoyment.

At the time of writing this post the book is selling for $17 on Amazon.com, an absolute steal for 200 pages of stunning Mignola art. This is easily one of the best art books I’ll review in 2019.

I also recommend Mike Mignola’s other art books – Art Of Hellboy and Hellboy : The First 20 Years.

If you had to compare ” the first 20 years” to “25 years of covers”- Is there a lot of art from Mignola in the second that is not covered in the first?

Paul – Unfortunately I do not have my copy of the 20 Years art book to do a proper side by side comparison, but by looking at the images from my review, I would say there is a significant number of overlapping material.

The biggest differences I guess for these two books is that “25 Years Of Covers” has an extra 5 years or so of Mignola’s latest art work included, and “the first 20 years” includes not just covers but sketches and other art work.

Now whether this new art book is worth the purchase is a harder question to answer; personally I’m a sucker for everything Mignola, so I’m happy to pay for it. :]

Yes, that hardcover price on Amazon was too hard for me to pass-up. 200 pages for a bit less than $17 is pretty amazing value.
