Ghost In The Shell 2 - Man Machine Interface Manga Review 攻殻機動隊 (2)

Ghost In The Shell 2 – Man Machine Interface is the 2nd manga sequel to Shirow Masamune’ groundbreaking comic Ghost In The Shell ( the 1st being Ghost In The Shell 1.5 – Human Error Processor ). Known as the cyber entity Motoko Aramaki, the former “Major” now works as a security expert for Poseidon Industrial.

While the art work in Human Error Processor still retained the goodness of Shirow’s “classic” style, with traditional media used to render the colored illustrations, Man Machine Interface sees the creeping in of that much dreaded digital look that really cheapens and sullies Shirow’s otherwise fantastic art work.

In addition to that, the characters seem to become much more sexualized, with the female characters deliberately posed to emphasis their posteriors and chest areas. Sure, there’s no lack of sexy women in Shirow’s work, but they’ve always been tastefully presented, and this manga seemed to have veered off that treatment.

All that said, there are still many things to like about the manga though; the artist’s black and white drawings remain fantastic and beautiful to look at, with incredibly detailed and complex scenes that are still fairly easy to read and follow.

For the best of his work, my pick is still Intron Depot. I also recommend Pieces Gem 02, featuring some of his older creations.

DISTRAKT

Whoa!

I’m not sure how I feel about the oversexualization in this series, especially considering it was never this bad before. But I do think the art is still amazing, and definitely worthy of praise. The action scenes still seem very dynamic as well, so I can’t complain too much.
Have you heard of Ultimate Outcast? It’s another action series that focuses on a guy who becomes the target of bullies after he transfers to a new school. He tolerates their abuse until they target his best friend and assault her. After he’s unable to stop them, he vows to get revenge for her and starts looking for someone to train him to fight. He ends up finding a really unusual master and because of his unique training methods, the main character gets really op and is able to carry out his desire for revenge. I also really like the main character because while he was initially driven by a desire for revenge, he uses his new strength to actually help others and protect people weaker than him. It also has really impressive action scenes, so if you’re looking to pick up any more action series, I highly recommend it.

I have this collection in English and agree that his earlier art style was more appealing, particularly as represented in Intron Depot, which really is a fantastic artbook (one of my favorites, actually).
