The Flowers Of Evil (Japanese title : Aku No Hana / French : Le Fleurs Du Mal) is an adult/erotic manga by Kazuo Kamimura. First published in 1975, the manga was previously available only in 3 separate tankobon volumes, but this new edition compiles the 3 books into a single volume, and is also slightly larger in print size.
My interest in Kazuo Kamimura’s work came about only recently when I chanced upon his art exhibition during my travels in Kyoto, and the illustrations featured in his art book Lyricism (book review here) really captivated me.
It was only at a later time that I realized he was also the manga artist behind Lady Snowblood, a seminal piece that was the artistic influence behind Tarantino’s Kill Bill.
The manga’s illustration style is clearly indicative of the Shōwa period, and by comparison to manga art work today it might seem a little simple and dated, but that’s also where the charm is. Kazuo-san’s background in advertising illustration work has given him a keen eye for aesthetically pleasing compositions and patterns, and his skill with designing graphics using flower motifs is fantastic.
I really like Kazuo Kamimura’s illustrations in his art book Lyricism – this manga gives the reader a chance to enjoy his art work in “long form”.
Please note that the manga has elements of SM/bondage and is not suitable for children.
