How To Draw Portraits In Charcoal is an instructional art book by fine arts and concept artist Nathan Fowkes, whose list of clients include Dreamworks, Disney and Bluesky. Over a span of 12 detailed chapters the artist takes the reader through the process of charcoal drawing using a combination of easy to follow tips and in-depth tutorials.
Some chapters include studies on structure and composition, the value of light and shadows as well as some common mistakes made by beginners, all valuable lessons in my opinion.
(above left) One of the mistakes I make all too often; concentrating all my energy on specific parts of the portrait and failing to recognize how the whole picture looks.
It goes without saying that mastery of any skill goes hand in hand with lots and lots of practice, but learning the right techniques are equally vital and this book helps to illuminate the complexities of portrait drawing so that they can be tackled more easily. Recommended.
I’ll like to thank Teena at Design Studio Press for providing me wih a copy of the book for review. You can also follow Nathan Fowkes on twitter.

Beautiful. I need to get back into life drawing. My one art school regret is not doing better in life drawing class. If I do get back into it I’ll consider this book as prime reference material.
