Denki – Kagakudokoro Yanagiya (デンキ ―科學処やなぎや―) is a short illustrated story by Japanese manga artist Tsuruta Kenji, who also bought us Wandering Island and the highly acclaimed Spirit Of Wonder, the latter which has been adapted into an anime (OVA). Previously I also reviewed his art book Future.
Yanagiya is a mobile food stand that doubles also as a laboratory, manned by the mad scientist Hakoda Ryunosuke and his female assistant Shimantogawa Yoyo. The story follows them as they travel the country in search of adventures.
The last chapter of the book is a small collection of artwork and sketches from the manga Tenbochin no Boken, released back in 1991.
I rather like the soft and subdued watercolors by the artist, and his illustrations and themes often carry a 60/70s nostalgic charm to them, just like those from his art book Future.
