Aquarium ( Suiso 水槽 ) is the 2nd art book by popular Japanese illustrator Daisuke Richard, whose impressionable art work has garnered him over 220k followers on Instagram.
Possessing an acute color sense, Richards subject matter focuses on Japanese school girls within the confines of their tiny, claustrophobic rooms piled up with clothes, books and personal belongings. While his first art book Kikanetsu ( read my review here ) had a stronger focus on the physical dwellings of the inhabitants, in Suiso he explores more of the human aspect with his subject matter.
The intoxicating combination of the artist’s lively use of colors and detailed drawings create interesting compositions that are fascinating to explore.
The last section of the book features instructional tutorials on how the artist create his illustrations; a good knowledge of Japanese will certainly come in handy here !
Daisuke Richard’s keen eye for striking compositions and superb use of colors are the big highlights of his illustration, and this 2nd art book showcases more of his unique skill set and is a nice follow-up to his first art book Kikanetsu. I look forward to seeing more of his work.
