B.P.R.D ( Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense ) is the spin-off comic series from Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, taking place in the same expanded universe as the organization’s “enhanced” agents like Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien and Johann Krauss battle the Ogdru Jahad that first appeared in the Hellboy comics.

Having come a long way since the earlier story arcs like Hell On Earth as well as Plague Of Frogs, this hardcover volume collects The Devil You Know arc and is the explosive conclusion to the B.P.R.D. series. Hellboy has been for the most part absent from the stories, but he makes a come back one last time to make a final stand for humanity.

Written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie and brilliantly rendered by artists Laurence Campbell, Christopher Mitten, Duncan Fegredo and Mignola himself, this book is a fitting end for a most fantastic comic run that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.

(above & below) The sketchbook section that is featured at the end of every BPRD omnibus volume is always a delight to read, filled with superb concept art and rough sketches done by the numerous artists working on this series.

It’s a pity that such a fantastic series is finally coming to an end, but the expansive universe created by Mike Mignola still has many other stories to tell, and I look forward to reading the omnibus volumes for Lobster Johnson and Witchfinder Edward Grey Vol 2 ( read my review for vol 1 here ).

This concluding volume of the BPRD series comes highly recommended.
