From the director of Dawn of the Dead, Watchmen, and Batman V Superman, comes Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder’s eagerly awaited return to the zombie scene, starring Dave Bautista. Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.
This 192 paged hardcover volume takes readers behind the scenes of this much-anticipated film and reveals the locations, characters, and zombies. The book is full to the brim with exclusive on-set photography, costume designs, storyboards by Zack Snyder, and more, and accompanied by cast and crew interviews. It’s very much a “making of” book rather than an “art of” book; with the exception of several concept art pieces for Zombie King Zeus, the queen and the undead tiger/horse, there’s not much in the way of development art featured in this book.
Zack Snyder has established himself as one of the most visually innovative directors working in Hollywood these days; his stylishly shot 300, with its distinctive slow-motion fight sequences has greatly influenced how scenes are shot for the action genre.
This Army Of The Dead coffee table book has plenty of both on-set and behind the scenes photographs and makes for an entertaining read for fans of the movie as well as followers of Zack Snyder’s filmography, but those seeking more in-depth coverage of concept art will find little of interest here; I hope a separate book focused on that might some day be published.
