Note : This is NOT an art book. For the artist’s art books, check out Cannabis Works and Cannabis Works 2.
Tatsuyuki Tanaka is one of the most highly skilled and renowned artist working in the anime/illustration/manga industry today, having worked on Otomo’s Akira, Nadia The Secret of Blue Water, Noiseman Sound Insect, Farewell To Weapons and many other animated projects.
This is a guide/instructional book where the artist imparts valuable knowledge, insider tips and tricks of successful animation, illustration and manga drawing techniques. He has actually been doling out said information for quite a while now, in chapters of the quarterly illustration magazine Kikan S, so this book is likely a compiled volume of his lessons.
I’m more than certain than there are tons of amazing information to be found in this book, but the prerequisite is the understanding of Japanese, as most of the good stuff is in written form. There are however, a good mix of images in the book to help illustrate his ideas.
Case in point ( image below ); Tanaka points out the generic style of drawing action ( plenty of speedlines and exaggerated actions ) before Otomo Katsuhiro revolutionized the art with his much more realistic style of drawing.
Tatsuyuki Tanaka touches on quite a huge list of topics in this book including storyboarding, genga, camera techniques like focus, depth of field, camera angles and much more. Even if you’re not fully versed in Japanese, the illustrations are still interesting to check out, and the book’s price tag is quite low. Highly recommended.
If you’re not here for the artist’s scholarly works and prefer to just check out his art, definitely take a look at his amazing art books Cannabis Works and Cannabis Works 2.

I really think this book should be translated in English. Is there any way to “push” the publisher?

Mfon – Thanks for visiting as always !
DISTRAKT – Highly recommended !
anonymouse007 – I can understand Japanese but it’s still quite a chore to read haha.
Kauf-Chat/Mario – Thanks for visiting Kauf-Chat ! I don’t know of any plans to translate the book into English. Most Japanese publishers release books with the domestic market in mind and have no plans to release international editions. Chances are slim to none I think, unfortunately.

Thanks for the review.
By the way, it appears that Katsuhiro OTOMO began publishing a new manga, a followup of his 80’s series Kibun Wa Mou Sensou.
