Akira Art Of Wall Art Book Preview

Update Dec 26th – Read the book review here.

From May 2017 to August 2019, 4 different sets of giant murals featuring the art work from Otomo Katsuhiro’s groundbreaking manga Akira were displayed outside the construction walls of Parco Shibuya as it underwent renovation. 2019 is a year of special significance as it is the year where the events of Akira takes place.

I visited the location a couple of times since 2017 and the photographs I took can be seen here, here and here.

To commemorate the completion of the newly renovated Parco Shibuya shopping mall, an upcoming exhibition Akira Art Of Wall will be held at 2 galleries located in the building, as well as the release of this special art book.

Housed in a beautifully designed “silver box”, the art book set contains 4 books; three foldout books with reproductions of the all mural art showcased in Shibuya from 2017-2019, one “making of” book, as well as an A2 sized poster. The dimension of the box is about 30 x 18 x 5cm.

I’ve already placed a reservation for a copy, and will do a full review of the book when it arrives ( book release is slated for 20th December 2019 ). I’m not sure how many copies have been printed, but I would recommend pre-ordering it earlier if you really want a copy ( so as to avoid the risk of disappointment in case it is sold out fast ).

Wow, definitely gonna need this to go along with the gigantic 1.5 by 1 metre Otomo × Kawamura calendar that Parco released last year!

And to the guy planning to frame this on his wall….good luck! The panorama measures out to 23 metres so you’re gonna need a few more walls, haha

Ralf – You’re most welcome ! :]

Otomochaser – Would love to see photos of that been put up on a big enough wall tho.

Chris

I just pre-ordered this as well. Looking forward to seeing this thing first hand.

Alex

Hmmm had this on pre-order since your first twitter post but just seen an unboxing of this by a dude in Japan on youtube.

The document books is just install photos of the hoardings, was really hoping it was going to include the prints by Kawamura that are framed in the exhibition. The bellows look really unwieldy and hard to look at. I have both Kaba books, the poster book, the Genga catalogue and his manga works in English that have been available but this is too much of a risk for the high price I think so have passed. Look forward to seeing your review though!

I did notice a book in someone’s photo’s of the shop called ‘1q7q Love and Peace’ by Kawamura, do you know anything about that book?

yonghow

Alex – I certainly agree about the price point, which is really high for an art book. I hope I won’t be disappointed !

About the art book ‘1q7q Love and Peace’ that you mentioned, it seems to be a collection of art work by Kawamura and a number of other artists, published in 2016 – https://amzn.to/2P5Tnge This is actually the first time I’ve heard about it.
