美人画 (Bijinga) is a genre in traditional Japanese art that focuses on the subject of beautiful women, often found in woodblock prints and Ukiyo-E. This book explores the history and lineage of the genre by examining 60 artists that best represent Bijinga artwork created over the Japanese historical eras, from the Meiji/Taiso right up to the early days of the Showa period, with over 120 pieces of art work included.
As I browsed through the book I was fascinated to see the various Western art influences in the evolution of the genre by painters like Gustav Klimt, The Impressionists, and even Pre-Raphaelite artists like Alma Tadema.
A fascinating study of the history and artistic evolution of Bijinga, told by the fantastic collection of art work featured in this handsome hardcover volume.
The genre of Bijinga remains popular in this contemporary age, and I highly recommend checking out these few art books that I’ve reviewed that showcases the beautiful art of Bjinga :
– Bijinga Zukushi
– Bijin-Ga Borderless
– One Hundred Nights Of Bliss
