Some pictures of the Criterion Collection release of Céline Sciamma stunningly shot period piece Portrait Of A Lady On Fire (2019).

I’ve heard many good things and positive chatter about the film on my twitter feed as I follow quite a few movie review sites, and the film certainly did not disappoint when I finally saw it, easily one of the best films I’ve seen this year.

The film’s cinematography is lovely throughout the film, but because the theme of the narrative revolves around a French salon painter, I was particular pleased by a few scenes in the film where the shots were lit primarily by candle light, which immediately reminded me of the famous French artist Georges de La Tour’s paintings –

The 4K transfer of the film is excellent and I am absolutely pleased with the visual quality; the film is shot on digital and there’s an interesting discussion on the decision the director and cinematographer took before deciding on which one to use, mostly to do with capturing the details of the actor’s skin tones and complexion.

This is yet another fantastic release from Criterion, and gets my highest recommendations.
