Having secured the 2023 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects as well as garnering top accolades for the strength of its storytelling, I need not wax more lyrical for Takashi Yamazaki’s outstanding Godzilla Minus One film. I am however excited to talk about the deluxe 4K UHD boxset ( which includes Godzilla Minus Color, a black & white cut of the film ) as well as the giant art/making of book, more details below, so read on !
Because of the immense popularity of the film, fans of the movie stateside and indeed countries outside of Japan were disappointed that there were no physical media release planned, and the Japanese edition included no subtitles of any kind. I think TOHO became cognizant of this issue and instead of relegating the release to a 3rd party company, they went ahead and made this deluxe edition themselves, which is by and large identical to the domestic Japanese version, with the notable inclusion of English subtitles. Check out the contents of the set in the images below –
At the time of writing this box-set is only available from the official TOHO Godzilla website, head on down to pre-order / check out more details.
UPDATE – I just found out that the deluxe boxset will only ship within the US; not even Canada. How disappointing; looks like I’ll have to settle for the Japanese release after all. T_T
And next up is this 400 pages, huge hardcover tome documenting the art & making of the film. The release format of this book is very similar to the one for Hideaki Anno’s Shin-Godzilla that I reviewed back in 2017. Below are some pictures of the book I found on Amazon Japan and Mercari.
The book is listed on Amazon Japan but does not seem to ship to Canada where I’m located, so I will likely be purchasing it from CDJapan.
I’ll of course be reviewing both the 4K box-set as well as the art book whenever I save up enough to buy them…hopefully before either or both of them are sold out.

unfortunately, the copious bonus material will be untranslated. i think only the movie will have english subs. why doesn’t toho want to sell even more units??? i would buy this in a millisecond if the bonus discs/ book were translated.

It’s fascinating how this monster is still successful despite his age. It’s an idea that’s 70 years old!
However, I think that the people needs to see a film with primordial, animalistic and brute force every now and then.
I think Godzilla will live on for a long time to come, in the movies…

kauf-chat – my 2 cents, but it would take a considerable amount of resources to translate all that material, especially when esoteric knowledge of filmmaking, production and vfx are required. It just wasn’t TOHO’s priority when releasing this is my guess.
Cristiano – Couldn’t have said it better myself. This film definitely reinvigorated the original “appeal” of the first Godzilla films.

ah, i didn’t think about the specialized knowledge/ terms that would be required to truly understand and translate the bonus materials. makes sense mr. yonghow.
