Some pictures of the Criterion Collection release of Brian De Palma’s most excellent crime/mystery film Blow Out (1981) which I picked up recently, together with Silence Of The Lambs and Cold War.
I watched Blow Out a good many years ago and the tense story and De Palma’s superb direction really left a deep impression on me, so I was always eager to re-visit the film again.
(below) Pages from the small booklet that features a new essay by critic Michael Sragow and Pauline Kael’s original New Yorker review.
There’s no mention of 4K re-mastering, but the restored digital transfer is as beautiful and sharp as one can hope; I’m personally very pleased with the image quality and have no complains whatsoever.
I took my time and watched all the supplementary materials, and my favorite is the interview with Brian De Palma conducted by Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach. I always like when directors interview other directors as they tend to ask more interesting and esoteric questions that a film critic or film reporter might not, and this one is no exception. Brian De Palma’s answers really gave me new insight into the making of the film, as well as his film-making thought processes. This is yet another fantastic release from Criterion, and gets my highest recommendations.
