Katoh Naoyuki is a veteran Japanese artist/mecha designer who has contributed to many science fiction illustrations since the 1970s, notably cover art for the Japanese editions of sci-fi novels like Starship Troopers.
This art book is a follow up to this first volume ( read review here ) and is titled “Jikukangasho” ( illustrated excerpts of space and time ). His illustrations and mecha design is also featured in the “Panzer Angel Gabriel” art book.
(above & below) In his previous art book Katoh-san cites his artistic influences by Victorian artists like Alma-Tadema and John William Waterhouse; in these 2 pieces here we seem to see a visual affinity to paintings by the great Gustav Klimt.
Probably stating the obvious, but many of the artist’s art works also bear a strong resemblance to the work of the late H.R Giger ( character designer behind the Alien film series ).
(above right) I really like the organic and often insectoid like mecha designs by katoh-san. (below) A good number of his illustrations take on a more surrealistic setting and feel.
Looking at Katoh Naoyuki’s sci-fi illustrations really fuels my imagination and I often find myself visualizing a universe inhabited by the surreal worlds he created. Highly recommended.
