Austin Briggs (1908 – 1973) was an American cartoonist and illustrator. Although he grew up on a farm with no books and no art, his talent for drawing and illustration eventually saw him taking on advertising agency work. He later became an assistant to the cartoonist Alex Raymond on Flash Gordon; after WWII he contributed art work to magazines like Readers Digest and The Saturday Evening Post.
This hardcover volume features a sizeable collection of his black and white drawings as well as his colored illustrations, with 160 pages of content.
While I am familiar with a few other American illustrators like J.C Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell and Robert McGinnis, it is only fairly recently that I’ve come across the works of Austin Briggs. The familiar subject matter he covers ( American culture in the 1950s ) certainly shares similarity with the paintings of Rockwell, but for me Austen Briggs’s illustrations feel less “art directed”, if you will. I hope to discover more of his work from now on.
