Amalgam is a collection of paintings (1992-2007) by consummate painter and graphic novelist Kent Williams. I’m a little embarrassed to say that I did not know his name until introduced by my illustrator friend Ray Toh, although I’ve seen his art before. (cover art for Rashomon, Criterion Blu-ray)
I’m neither expert nor knowledgeable enough to make any useful comment about his style of painting, although the expressiveness of his characters does somehow remind me of Norman Rockwell’s work.
Kent Williams was a regular contributor to Marvel Comics’ Epic Illustrated, and also a regular cover artist for Vertigo’s Hellblazer in 1990–1991. In 2006 he illustrated a graphic novel adaptation of The Fountain from the script by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. I haven’t seen any of the above, but I’m motivated to check them out now.
Looking forward to discovering more of Kent Williams work. Highly recommended.

Oh wow! I was not aware that there is a collection of his work out! I’m definitely going to pick it up! I grew up with his work when he was at Marvel! I especially loved his work on the Epic line for Blood: A Tale and especially Havok and Wolverine: Meltdown! Blood got reprinted I believe not too long ago by Vertigo I think! Though, they may have gone out of print since. I know Havok and Wolverine is long out of print as well! Only way to get ahold of them is through comic conventions. I hope you get to find them and check them out! Kent Williams is right up there with Jon J Muth, Dave McKean, Bill Sienkiwicz, and George Pratt! For me anyway!
