Yeah. Because that’s exactly how I would describe them too. “Rough”.
I remember a conversation I once had with Freedom director Morita Shuhei, who referred to Tatsuyuki Tanaka as “an absolute genius”. Not convinced ? Check out this short animated gif.
Below are some more “rough” sketches and layout boards from Tanaka-san’s website, which sadly hasn’t been updated for a while.
You can see more of his recent work in Otomo Katsuhiro’s animated film Short Peace “Farewell To Weapons”, and here are some exceptional pieces featured in the Japan Comickers 2 art book.
And of course, his Cannabis Works is an absolute must.
Thanks to Bahi for the link to his website.

Kiyozo – I’ve actually not seen Tokyo Ghoul yet, so I really can’t comment. Is it good ? 😛
martin – Definitely feel the same way about Mitsuo Iso. I wonder what he’s been up to lately ?

Tokyo Ghoul the anime condenses the manga material a lot, so it is not for manga purists. There were also other issues such as limited budget and censoring (I recommend the BD.) The final episodes of both seasons are masterpieces in terms of direction though.
