Ping Pong the Animation: Complete Series Blu-ray

Funimation is releasing Masaaki Yuasa’s highly acclaimed Ping Pong The Animation series on blu-ray, due on the 23rd of June 2015 for $34.49.

I’m definitely picking this one up because it’s an amazing series; the original Japanese blu-ray boxset is just too expensive for me, much as it is tempting.

If you’ve heard good things about this anime but are hesitant to watch it because pingpong really isn’t your thing, I urge you to give it a chance – the subject matter is just a transient medium by which the filmmakers employ to tell their story, and the series is immersed in rich character development and interesting, sometimes even profound musings on the philosophy of life. Anime like this don’t come by all the time.

For a taste, here are some beautiful art work from the official Ping Pong The Animation art book :

Damn right anime like this doesn’t come around all the time. I’ve been waiting for something else to fit the bill since I watched this last year. I’ve come up short. Pointy chins and feathered hair as far as the eye can see. Guess I’ll stick with JoJo’s until further notice.

gorgeous. i should give this show a second chance, not that it failed to give a good impression, i was impressed with the 1st episode at the time, i was just a bit too preoccupied.
plus masaaki yuasa is one of my favorite animation creators, i shouldnt be disappointed if i watch the whole series.

Indeed! Every time I think I am just not interested in animation anymore, something like this comes around and gets me so excited and reminds me why I love it. Granted, I don’t know if I get more excited about anyone currently working in comics right now, but this series was a wonderful feat in and of itself, with some of the most interesting animation I have seen in years.

Apparently you can’t ruin his stories, even with live action adaptations like Blue Spring (one of my personal favorites), and even Ping Pong.
