Isao Takahata Exhibition 2025 「高畑勲展 ̶日本のアニメーションを作った男。」

Summers in Japan, especially in big cities like Tokyo are notoriously hot and hellish, but the one good thing that comes with the summers are the fantastic art and animation exhibitions lined up during the season; like this spectacular one on Ghibli background artist Kazuo Oga that I saw way back in 2007.

This summer one of the highlights has got to be the ‘Isao Takahata – THe Man Who Planted Japanese Animation’ ( 高畑勲展 ̶日本のアニメーションを作った男。) exhibition slated to be held at the relatively new and swanky Azabu Hills Gallery. Check out the 2 beautiful posters for the exhibition below –

While no specific details have been shared on the scope of art work that will be displayed at the exhibition, one can expect some of Takahata’s best and most renowned works like Graveyard Of The Fireflies as well as Heidi, Girl Of The Alps to be showcased. I will try to update this page when new information is available.

Takahata Isao - A Legend In Japanese Animation Exhibition

I had the good fortune to visit the ‘Takahata Isao – A Legend In Japanese Animation’ exhibition back in 2019 ( image above ) and it was excellent, so I’m sure this upcoming one will be fantastic as well.

I love that the title of the exhibition is a reference to Frederic Back’s 1987 film that had such a huge influence on Takahata. From what I understand, Takahata’s shift away from traditional cel approaches with his later films was directly inspired by Back. (speaking of which, it’s a crime his films aren’t on blu-ray, but rather, a rare out of print DVD which I am lucky enough to be in possession of)
