The Boy And The Beast ( バケモノの子/Bakemono No Ko ) is the latest film by celebrated anime director Mamoru Hosoda ( Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children ). This book features an expansive collection of art work from the film, including background plates, layout boards, genga ( key animation drawings ), character design sheets and more.
The first section of the book is dedicated to the many gorgeous background art created for the film ( collated by scene and cut number ), featuring work from some top talent in the field like Kazuo Oga and Ono Hiroshi.
(below) Background art pieces depicting Shibuya, one of the most iconic spots of Tokyo. Here are some photos of late night Shibuya I took some time back.
(above) Character designs sheets. ( below ) Select samples of genga pieces, these particular ones were by famed animator Toshiyuki Inoue ( Ghost In The Shell, Jinroh, Paprika, Wolf Children and many more ).
The last section delves into CG usage on the film – anime these days use quite a lot of CG and the integration is becoming more and more seamless, which is great.
Just like the Wolf Children art book that came before, this is a very comprehensive volume with tons of great material from the making of the film; the background art pieces are especially delightful. Highly recommended.
