With the release of The Hobbit : The Desolation Of Smaug just round the corner this book review for An Unexpected Journey comes woefully late, but it’s still a great chance to catch up on some of the fantastic art behind the first film.
Art for An Unexpected Journey is pubished in 2 separate volumes, Art & Design (covered in this review), and Creature & Characters.
Art & Design covers in detail the props, weapons and costume design for the lead characters, as well as concept art for the various key locations like Bag End, Rivendell, Wilderland, Goblin Town and more. Many of the minute details created by the artists are present only for a few seconds on screen, so the book is a good chance to study and pore over the intricacies of their work at your own pace.
The Hobbit trilogy has been criticized by many for not staying true to the book (both in length and story), but the artistry behind the film remains impressive nonetheless. This book comes highly recommended.
