Porco Rosso ( Kurenai No Buta / Crimson Pig ) is a Ghibli animated film by Miyazaki Hayao, based on a 3 part manga series (Hikotei Jidai ) first published in the Japanese magazine Model Graphix. The manga is now collected in another of Miyazaki’s art book Daydream Notes. ( read book review here. )
This art book focuses mostly on character concept and design sketches, plane designs and background art work for the film. There is also a complete screenplay accompanied by thumbnail images from the film at the end of the book.
(above) Mamma Aiuto ( Help, Mamma ! in Italian ) is a band of Aero Vikings in the film. It is also the name of the delightful gift shop inside the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka.
(below) Miyazaki-san’s love for pigs and old planes is manifestly clear in the film. His upcoming film, Kaze Tachinu, will talk about the engineer of the famous WWII Japan Zero fighter plane.
(above and below) Select background art plates from the film, many painted by renowned background artist Kazuo Oga.
(above) Monochrome image boards used during the ending credits. (below) Marketing materials.
Porco Rosso is one of Miyazaki-san’s most light hearted films and I adore every bit of it. If you enjoy the film as I do, picking this up should be an easy decision.
Note : The book reviewed above is the original Japanese version. You can also pick up the English version from Amazon. The contents should be identical.

the best! Porco Rosso is still my favorite Ghibli film; it has everything that i love, and every time i watch this film i wish that i lived on his island and in that world. the vivid red flying ship (with it’s splash of green and white) soaring against the beautifully clear and embracing blue sky and sea still feel like a wonderful dream every time i see it, and the combination of said colors in motion stir my heart like few other things in this world can.
