This box arrived just before I departed for my vacation in Singapore so its was only very recently that i had a chance to take a closer look at the contents. Sword of the Stranger is a samurai period film by animation studio Bones, and directed by veteran animator turned director Ando Masahiro. Here’s a more detailed writeup on the film. The story and plotline has little to shout about, but the animation is top notched, most notably the fight sequences near the end of the film.
Housed within the sturdy, thick cardboard box are 2 slip cases that house the main animation feature and specials, 3 discs in all, a thin booklet with select, reproduced layout boards and a thick storyboard book, as shown below.
I haven’t taken a look at the contents of the special discs but I reckon there should be some quality stuff spread between the 2 discs.
Next up is a small collection of reproduced layout boards, with Japanese captions.
And lastly we have the complete storyboard book used during production.
Sadly, there are no subtitles of any kind for either the animation feature or the extras ( which isn’t exactly a surprise for most Japanese dvd boxsets ), so the US version might be a better bet for those who are just interested in the film itself. For those who are in for the extras, you can get a copy of this boxset here.
Folks who are keen on the BLU-RAY boxset can get one here.

*sigh* Guess I’ll continue saving money for the R1 boxset (if there ever is one).

Ganaesh – I’m pretty sure there will be an R1 reason for this title, but they probably won’t include all the extras in the Japanese box.

x_X I want it SO badly….ugh. I cant believe yet I can, how much it costs…*sigh*. I don’t think I could ever afford it………well, I….um. I could hope its still available over my next say 2 months paychecks, around that time I still got 3 other anime series or games on release though too I really want…
I really hope they at least release an artbook/guidebook of this movie if anything…but assumeing it all comes in this collection, perhaps not….x_x. But wouldnt they make an actual artbook that will stay out longer, for those who cant get hands on this? Id really buy that! than wait for my english copy of the movie…

i received a copy of the dvd boxset today and i have to say my eyes are about to pop out of their sockets just from staring at the artwork…
the layout and storyboard booklets are really amazing. I wish the dvd features were subtitle though !!! well, i was more interested in the extras than the dvds themself so i’m still happy with the content. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for your help

I’m extremely picky about anime as in I look for good story and fluent animation. This film had everything great story, animation, voice acting, etc. If anyone on this site can suggest any good animes like Cowboy Bebob, Tekkonkinkreet, S. Champloo, etc., I’d be forever greatful – Email: ryan_tillett22@yahoo.com

What extras are located on the two bonus DVDs and how many minutes they take?
